Friends of Brookside Gardens (FOBG) would like to share the sad news that its founding member and first president, Joan O’ Rourke, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Joan established the Friends of Brookside Gardens in 1996 with a group of like-minded people who had a vision to increase philanthropic and educational support for Brookside Gardens. She served as the President of FOBG for many years and continued to bring her insight and experience to the board until her death.

Joan was passionate about supporting the mission of Brookside Gardens – volunteering at the children’s education program, butterfly show, chrysanthemum show, propagation greenhouse and teaching numerous classes at Brookside Gardens. Her generous philanthropy includes funding the state-of-the-art John & Joan O’Rourke Greenhouse including its continuing needs, the gatehouse at the Visitor Center and the new feature in the Gude Garden (under construction).

Among her numerous accolades, she received the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association Community 2010 Volunteer Award for more than 15 years of extraordinary volunteer service at Brookside Gardens. She was also a Montgomery County Master Gardener. She initiated and provided leadership for FOBG’s Perennial Plant Sale.  Her absence at the FOBG board will be an immense loss, but we hope that her legacy and love of FOBG and Brookside Gardens will continue to flourish. Joan O’Rourke was a “perennial” inspiration for all who knew her.

Because the family prefers a private funeral, Friends of Brookside Gardens and Brookside Gardens will hold a tribute in Joan’s memory next spring. To honor Joan, you may donate to Friends of Brookside Gardens and please mention that your contribution is in memory of Joan O’Rourke.
